I generally find Duncan pickups to be muddy, especially the 59, Jazz, and JB models.
I really like Duncan Distortions, though.
Otherwise I’m pretty much Dimarzio all the way. Dimarzio pickups do it for me all across the board.
Still, those oldstock EMG sets are unbeatable. Probably will always be my first choice.

I’ve always had an EMG 81/85 set that was produced around 1991. It has nice warm tone and sounds delicious. It’s my favorite pickup set in the world.
It has always been puzzling to me why people describe EMG pickups as sterile and ‘plasticky’. My own experience contradicts that.
I recently got to play an EMG set from the current production line and I totally get it now.
What happened, EMG? Seriously.
Moral of the story: Buy used, buy old.
